Dong Hoi, the capital of Quang Binh province, is the town closest to the impressive Phong Nha Cave, which is located to the north. The spectacular 8-kilometer-long cave was used by the North Vietnamese as a field hospital, which was frequently attacked but never successfully destroyed by the U.S. There are also some nice beaches on the other side of the Nhat Le River, along which the town is situated. To the south, the province borders the former Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) established by the 1954 Geneva Accords.
